Disrespect at work can hide in plain sight
According to Safe Work Australia, more than one million Australians have experienced workplace violence or aggression, and approximately 318,000 women have been subjected to sexual violence at work after the age of 15. Despite the seriousness of these behaviours, only around 46% of incidents are ever reported.
Employers have legal responsibility under Australian law to protect the wellbeing of their teams. However, research shows that many people do not report harmful behaviour, often because they don’t recognise certain actions as falling within the definitions of bullying, harassment or violence.
- The problem exposes businesses and organisations to the risk of disruption, high staff turnover and financial loss.
- The solution starts with training, to ensure employees at all levels understand what unacceptable behaviour looks like.
- The outcome is consistent understanding of what respectful behaviour looks like across the business, a culture of trust and a happier, healthier and more engaged team.
